Oh, I could REALLY use your insight on this topic. In my personal opinion, that's MUCH better than being the best at one thing and kinda sucking at everything else - it makes you more versatile useful in real life. That said, someone dear to me thinks like you do and I'm bumping my head against the difference of opinion. I don't know how to comfort her, or what words might make it better.
*I* know how awesome she is, since she can do lots of things well but *she* think's she's a loser because she's midling in sports, doesn't have a boyfriend or a bff. She doesn't see that she has a TON of friends who love and admire her, and she's really too young to be worrying about "true love".
Oh yeah, I'm less likely to get killed and eaten on a deserted island, and I am more capable than a lot of people at most things, but I want to SHINE at something. I suppose it's probably something that bothers me less overall than it would to be only good at one thing, but why can't I be ok at everything except the one thing that I'm the best at?
THAT is the $10,000 question. That question is what I am trying to understand. H. is facing the same issue, and it's making her very difficult to live with. I'd like to find some way to soothe her, but feel helpless and clueless.
WHY does she feel so sad that she's not the best at any one thing, when she's so good at almost everything?
But she's young! She can pick something and stick with it now, and she'll be awesome at it when she gets older. Plus, she'll still be pretty good at other things! I wish I could go back in time and just pick something.
